The GMD FP9 (often referred to as FP9A) is a 1,750 hp locomotive built primarily for Canadian railways for passenger and freight service. manufactured between February 1954 and December 1959 by General Motors Electro-Motive Division and General Motors Diesel. Final assembly took place at the GM-EMD plant in La Grange, Illinois, with the exception of Canadian orders, which were assembled by the Canadian subsidiary GMD in London, Ontario. The FP9 was essentially EMD's F9 locomotive, lengthened by four feet to provide a larger steam generator and greater water capacity for hauling passenger trains. A total of 90 locomotives with cabs were built; unlike the freight locomotives, no wireless booster B locomotives were sold. Normal F9B units were sometimes used together with FP9-A units, as they offered more space for water and steam generators without a cab. The FP9 and its predecessor, the FP7, were offshoots of GM-EMD's very successful F-Unit series, which consisted of diesel locomotives with cabs.
